If you want more info on the stats needed to get in and what to expect for the essays, I would visit College Essay Organizer's site. It's free, and there's lots of great info. I'm applying to, and I already started writing my main essays so I won't get slammed in the fall.

I was wondering if since my SAT scores areso low if i could take them Oct of my senior year and still apply to PSU MAIN and get in. i did not study for theSATS but i think that if i did i could get muchhh higher. please answer asap PSU is my dream school. i love everything about it.

Your stats are alright. Hopefully you are taking some more APs next year as well. I'm not sure you would get 2100 even if you studied a TON but I believe a 1700+ is possible for you if you study really hard. Don't take it again unless you STUDY. You can take your SAT oct next year but you can also take the ACT in september & october I believe so there's 2 tries you can get in before application deadline. Remember to take the ACT as well. It's sometimes easier for certain people (it has a science section).

My stats: I got into PSU main with a $6,000 scholarship each year for 4 years. I didn't study for my ACT and got a 32. My weighted GPA was 4.18 and 3.41 unweighted with 8 AP classes and 9 honors classes taken. I was President and founder of 2 clubs. Founder and treasurer of another. I also had 650+ hours of volunteering.

What is valued more, ACT or SAT? I know they accepted both but do they see one test being stronger than the other?

The test you score higher on is best. Take both exams and see what percentile you place in for each. Then decide what to submit on an application. Also, most people benefit from taking an exam a 2nd time (particularly the ACT) - if they did not take a prep class.

I have a 3.154 unweighted GPA and a 3.6 weighted GPA. I've been taking all AP and honors classes since freshman year and an SAT score of 1660. I am a member of the Spanish Honor Society. Do i have a chance of getting in ?

1 point by feelthejuju   2 days ago

If you can, retake your SAT and try to get 1700+. Your GPA is on the lower side of the average but being a member of a club isn't really much unless you have had leadership in it. Do you have other extracurriculars? Or maybe you're 1st generation to go to college or something? That will help.

Try to get it to be a 1700+ SAT score and you have a pretty good chance. I'm taking the 3.8 GPA as unweighted hopefully?

What are my chances of going to Penn? GPA: 3.5 ACT: 26 I am in National Technical Honor Society, speak 3 languages, placed second in state for HOSA competition. I have taken 9 AP classes, 8 Pre-AP classes and 5 levels of a foreign language. I am in 7 clubs and I hold an officer position in 3 clubs. I'm a Hispanic scholar. I have scored a three or above in 7 of my AP classes. Thank you.

I think you have a high chance of getting in. Your rigorous high school schedule makes up for your 3.5 gpa

What are my chances for PSU Main + Schreyer Honors College (if I have decent essays)? (I'm a PA resident.)

Unweighted GPA: 4.0 Weighted GPA: 5.0 (out of 5.0) SAT: 2060/2400 (630CR, 760M, 670W/11 on Essay) ACT + Writing: Pending (I get them back in about three days or so.) I try to take a lot of AP courses as well, though I don't always take the AP exams. I'm not sure I should take SAT Subject Tests or not...

I do a lot of ECs, including musical, chorus, lab assisting, National Honors Society, and science fair. (There are more.) I've also had the privilege of singing at Carnegie Hall and interning for the AP Chemistry course at my school. During the summer, I do some charity work for children with disabilities, primarily by fundraising through my school's drama department.

Thank you so much for your time!

I know this must be a late reply but I have roughly around the same GPA and sat score as you and is planning on applying to Penn state for the 2013 fall semester. If you don't mind me asking how did it turn out for you? Did you end up applying? I would love some feedback from someone who has roughly around the same stats as I.

You seem to have a chance - maybe consider applying early action/ decision to secure a spot. I would say that its a fifty fifty chance.

What are my chances? GPA- 3.5 Non-weighted, 4.1 Weighted SAT- 1670/2400 and 1090/1600 (I know these scores are lower, but I'm retaking the test after taking private classes with a tutor) A lot of extra curricular activities with sports and as an editor on the school newspaper I also live in Pennsylvania, if that helps since I am instate.

After e-mailing admissions, they said he can do the summer start program at University Park and continue into fall. jwheel, you might want to look into it.

Good luck.

1 point by Ashley41   2 years ago

Congratulations jwheel243, I'm glad it worked out for you!

1 point by jwheel243   2 years ago

Originally after I contacted them, they said they couldn't do anything. But by the end of the week, I was told that my admission decision had been changed, that I was accepted into U. Park with the summer session. So I will be in Happy Valley next year!

My son had a 95.9% chance and he was just denied. Unweighted GPA of 3.93/4.04 weighted, and 1940 SAT. Rigor of coursework and number of academic classes far exceeds their requirements. It makes no sense. I agree with jwheel243, white males are at a disadvantage for simply being white males.

1 point by feelthejuju   2 days ago

That really isn't true. luktheduk67 is right. Many people are becoming just like your son and to be able to stand out your son needed extracurriculars.

2 points by luktheduk67   11 months ago

Ma'am, academics alone won't do it. Extracurricular activities and leadership experience is becoming a bigger factor because more and more students are becoming like your son.

1 point by jwheel243   2 years ago

91.3% and they said no...3 people at my school got in with lower numbers. but one is asian, one egyptian, and one with a legacy...not fair. white guys cant do anything anymore, can we?

1 point by feelthejuju   2 days ago

You most likely had no special extracurriculars. That asian and egyptian most likely did.

Does legacy still play an important role in the admission decision? Does Penn State look at legacy at all when deciding?..because both my grandfathers, my aunts, as well as my mom and dad went there.

I believe that legacy plays a very important role in the admission decision.

Hey, I have a 3.43 cumulative GPA before the start of my senior year. I've had many honors classes & a couple AP classes. Does my GPA change that much when I make it unweighted? Do I have a chance for summer session at PSU Main even if my SAT's are middle of the pack?

1 point by collegess   3 years ago

i have a 2.31 unweighted, 760/1600 on the old SAT's, which colleges should i go to?

1 point by JSTNMX   2 years ago

I think that you should apply to some local community college and work on bringing your average up. If you do not have a talent or skill - i.e - Football, Basketball or play an insstrument, it will be difficult to get into a good four year school

I have a 3.7 and 1820...my sister goes to main now and made the Dean's list, so I guess I have a sort of legacy. It tells me 91.3%, and my sister tells me I'll be fine, but I'm stressing because I wanna go so bad. I just went to their football game and the atmosphere is incredible and I love the place. I applied early decision and everything, but what do you think?

Are your stats for real? You have perfect scores listed for everything on your profile. If that is the case, then I don't see how you wouldn't be accepted, other than egregious mistakes, falsehoods, or offensive stuff on your application, or if PSU does strategic waitlisting or rejections.

1 point by BHwhs   3 years ago

Yes, my stats are real. Thanks for your response!

I talked to an admissions person and they said that psu really looks at just gpa and sat/act scores. they look at anything else but just ask for it. they said that it is based as 2/3 gpa and 1/3 sat score

the typical path that a person takes if they're accepted to a satellite campus but not University Park is that they'll spend a year or two at the satellite then transfer to main.

PSU itself actually advertises the "2+2" path in which you do the 2 years at satellite then transfer and do the remaining 2 at main.

yep.

1 point by Jacobbob   3 years ago

so if a person gets accepted into one of the branches, would it be possible to get into Penn State right after Freshman year?

1 point by Riguy   3 years ago

forgot that as a possible outcome.

1 point by appellative   3 years ago

another thing that happens for penn state is that a person won't get into university park but then they'll be accepted into one of the satellite campuses. so it's not TECHNICALLY a rejection. but yeah.

1 point by Riguy   3 years ago

you said add it to your profile.

1 point by Riguy   3 years ago

but this site does not seem to include many branches for this particular school. and I'm not sure there would be many data points if it did. users on this site are generally shooting much higher.

1 point by James   3 years ago

Can you apply directly into branches? If so, I would tend to call a rejection at Main a rejection, and I'd add the branch to my profile to indicate that they accepted me. But that's just my perspective. What do you think?

1 point by Riguy   3 years ago

how do you account for an applicant who is rejected at Main, but accepted at a branch?

1 point by harvard521   3 years ago

Nevermind it's main campus!

1 point by harvard521   3 years ago

Which campus is this?

1 point by James   3 years ago

Just checked and many people from 2010 reported their rejection status. This will be extraordinarily helpful when we update the model in May/June. Sincere thanks to all who did this.

1 point by James   3 years ago

It's actually just that (1) we don't have enough results from rejected students to emit more confident calls, and (2) there is a huge imbalance between the # of accepted and # of rejected students who choose to report their decisions. It seems to be a much bigger problem here than at other schools, for some reason.
