Yale University Discussion
Yale has been my dream for as long as i can remember!!! I just moved from Australia at the start of my Junior year. Because of this, i was not able to take any AP classes from Freshman to Junior year. Will this hurt me in my chances to applying to more elite schools? P.S. I was in a Selective School in Sydney, which is equivalent to a Magnet School. Thanks :)
Does anyone know how much (if at all) the Yale Global Scholars Program affects admission to Yale?
Hi, I'm wondering what my chances are for getting accepted in the regular decision. I have a composite ACT 33, SAT combined of 2090, 9 AP classes ,3 dual enrollment classes at UGA GPA (unweighted) 4.0 GPA weighted: 4.3 Captain of two varsity sports and president of 5 school clubs Hispanic I realize my scores are definitly on the lower side for the school, but I thought I would apply anyway. If you all could tell me what you think, that would be greatly appreciated! Also, the essay I submitted had a huge typo, and "i" instead of "I" Oops!
i'm east asian, applying regular decision. 4.0 unweighted gpa, 36 composite on act, 2310 on sat, 800 on sat math 2 and chemistry, will have taken 12 ap classes and 7 honors by the time i graduate, 5s on all of the ap tests i have already taken. relatively involved in clubs i'm passionate about and hold a few leadership. full details on profile. thanks!
Highest chance Asian can have is 30%. Which is actually 50%.
Although you have obviously worked very hard and have earned an education to match your achievements and aptitude, the chances of being admitted to Yale are low. There are very few students as talented as you, but the university is quite small. If you can pay for some of your education, you might consider UChicago. They are expanding and have more room for talented students like you. If you need a "free ride," applying at your best state college is probably a safe bet. If you look at national college rankings, at approximately #100, is where you will find your best chances of receiving merit aid.
Does anyone have an idea of how likely my acceptance would be at Yale? I scored a 32 Composite on my ACT (36 English, 29 Math, 34 Reading, 30 Science, 10 Writing). I'm half Filipino, half Caucasian. I'm heavily involved in extracurriculars (NHS President, Math Club Co-President, Medical Club Officer, Inter-Club Committee Officer, Gay Straight Ally) and my class rank is 20th out of 400 students. My unweighted GPA is 3.95 out of 4.0, and weighted is 4.35 out of 5.0. I'm taking five AP classes as of right now, and my last two AP classes I took one AP Test for Language and Composition and scored a 4. Any ideas? I can provide more info if needed.
I think you have a fairly decent chance if you claim the half Filipino, half Caucasian. Don't listen to LittleBird 17; you can do way better than community college! :)
Your chances at Yale are 10% based on classifying yourself as Caucasian. If you can claim Hispanic ethnicity (assuming Filipino is not an option), chances should be around 40%. The "other minority" and Asian classifications have the same disadvantage as Caucasian in applicant selection.
You have a very low chance, FIRST OF ALL, your lying, or retarded, your takin all those AP classes an you get a 29 in math, and a 10 in writting(in your ACT), your not takin all those Ap classes and are in all those extracurricular activities, either you only sleep 1 hour a day, or your lying. So main point is that you are not goin to Yale, so start thinking about community.
If you could use proper grammar (assuming you're unaware of the contraction "you" and "are" to make "you're", whereas you are now mistaken and making use of a possessive), I might have taken your comment more seriously. I've worked very hard to attain officer status in multiple clubs whilst juggling a high GPA and holding two jobs. Do the words "work ethic" mean anything to you? In addition, I noticed that your low SAT index scores and "Sim City" claim to fame don't give you much to work with in search of colleges. Come back when you've obtained some real attributes.
If you really think that she doesn't have a chance, you don't have to be so rude about it.

To anyone saying "my [insert relative here] went to Yale," congrats. You have smart relatives. The schools care most about your essays, test scores, grades, character extracurriculars, etc. If you and another student are EXACTLY the same, then being a legacy might help you, but otherwise not. Unless said legacy donated millions to the school. Bottom line-until your SAT clears 2100, and you have a perfect GPA, stellar extracurriculars and a flawless essay, legacy doesn't really matter. Yale will take qualified applicants only. GPA is also so inflated nowdays, that according to a Stanford admissions rep, some students apply with 10.0 GPAs. They look more at if you challenged yourself by taking hard classes. That said, good luck!
How are my chances at Yale? I plan on retaking the sat to heighten my scores and my projected chance of admittance is 41%. Also my aunt and two of my cousins attended here.
How are my chances? I feel like I'm all there except for Reading =/
If someone would chance me at Yale that'd be great! I am extremely interested in the school and my projected chance of admittance is 24% which I think is pretty good. I'll return the favor! Thanks again!
Hello. My parents make below 2500 dollars per year. I live in Montana but go to a nonboarding school in New York. I have a 5.00 and 2400. Chance? I'll chance back.
PS I'm a Native American who has won science and math competitions at the national level. :]
Just finished submitting my Early Action application! I love Yale and am wondering what my chances of getting in are... If you chanced me I'd really appreciate it and would return the favor! (My current generated chance is 21%.. I think that's something to be happy about??)
Chance me? The site-generated 5.1 is bumming me out-- I was at least hoping to sneak into the double digits, maybe early teens. Any guesses as to why so low?
Your GPA and SAT scores are a bit below average for Yale.
blunt
Exactly what I needed, if I needed someone to beat around the bush I'd have asked my parents. Thanks everyone!
But true. Not to mention that the 3.5 unweighted, 3's on AP's, and not having any extracurrics listed for freshman OR junior year (with no explanation) makes us hesitant to chance you well. But hey, Ivies are a crapshoot for everyone, and I mean everyone. Good luck to ya!
i'd most definitely agree, but i just found it funny how curt he was--very collegeconfidential hahaha
I guess I've been calloused by the college admissions process already. I'm not trying to be rude.
Chance me bros. I always chance back.
I was just reading that Yale sent out their likely letters to the top of the line students that have focused their skills into math and science, specifically engineering. Did anyone on this site get lucky enough to receive one of these letters?
Nah. But I did apply into a science major and got in (despite having a lower than average SAT score and applying for financial aid) BTW, I'm a girl, so that would probably be a big advantage over other people who applied into history/art/philosophy majors
I have read up on the Skull and Bones club a little but I was kind of hoping to get a student's perspective. Is it a prominent thing on campus or do kids talk about it a lot. I am just curious.
It's like 18 seniors per year. Societies as a whole make up a reasonable part of many Yale seniors' Thursday and Sunday nights, but otherwise they're inconsequential for social life. The frats, which aren't a huge scene at Yale, are much more consequential
Is it really secretive about who the members are or do people know who is in it?
The Rumpus publishes a generally-accurate list every year. It's an open secret.
Haha that is kinda weird. The Skull and Bones has come in conversation like four times this week for me so now I know a little more about it. Thanks.
One of its founders, Daniel Coit Gilman, was Johns Hopkins' first president.
Deferred. :(
It looks like they deferred a whopping 3000 of us..
you can't be serious. this is insanity
Right? Total number of applicants: 5257 Number admitted: 761 Number deferred: 2952 Number denied: 1497
It looks like they also admitted a higher number than they usually do for REA.
I just realized that these numbers don't add up to 5257. These were the stats that Yale gave in their letter...
mathacle.blogspot.com/2010/...
750 seems to have been the target number
Gonna copy James here and link to the original:
That is crazy because that means they will only accept another 800 or so out of the 15,000 regular decision applicants.
mathacle.blogspot.com/2010/...
correction: ~1300 offers of admission for RD
Original source (from which that is taken verbatim) is www.yaledailynews.com/news/...
Sorry to hear that :( Good luck in the regular rounds though!!!
23 hours until decision time....
30 minutes.
Good luck!
Regarding my comment about staying up all night: they used to release the decisions around midnight. If they don't anymore, then I sound unnecessarily crazy =)
Oh, gotcha. haha. Thanks for all the good luck wishes. I'm currently in an English review session for my final tomorrow. Can't concentrate.
Best of luck 15 minutes
Deferred...
I'd take it as an honor to even be deferred from a school like Yale, look on the bright side. I got rejected.
Thank you. Really. I'm sorry, man. You have some other great schools on your list that I'm confident you'll get into though!
Going for an unprecedented 3rd ED vandy. 3rd choice might as well try haha
9 years ago I was up all night waiting (yep, even back then we got our decisions online!).
Good luck, everyone!
Haha that just shows how stubborn and reluctant notre dame is in regards to updating to modern times.
My friend recently got accepted to William and Mary. They told her they send decisions by snail mail, but she ended up getting an e-mail with her decision the day of, too. So maybe they'll surprise you.
Applied Early Action. Let's see how this goes.
Your Sat scores amazing...I applied early too..Not too optimistic but gave it a shot...Just curious why is ur weighted ave. is only 4? doesn't your school give a extra point for AP classes? Good luck! Just couple more days.
Thanks. My school actually just grades numerically and weights classes by adding points to your numeric grade, so I didn't really know how to calculate my unweighted or weighted GPA. I ended up getting deferred anyways haha
81.0%, application in... Time for the great wait.
79.7%. we'll see how true this is come decision day.
:( if i were hispanic i'd have an 86% chance dang it, now is when i wish i weren't asian
or i could keep telling myself that these predictions are almost pointless, just to make myself feel better
do any of you ever wish, just for apps, that you could have a different ethnicity?
22.1% chance I guess that is good considering the regular admit rate is 9.9% but it is still kind of scary. I guess the good thing is that I haven't seen many with much of a better chance than me who doesn't have a legacy. Am I correct when it comes to these points?
I agree with you on all points. You're interpreting this the way that I would: better than average chances, but definitely not a sure thing. (And for whom would Yale be a sure thing!?)
^a North Korean, Balalaika-playing, Olympic gymnast, with a 5.0 weighted GPA, a perfect SAT score, internships at WaMu and the Pentagon (taking care to emphasize the recent successes of both institutions ;]), and who uses quotes from Mean Girls and Albert Camus in their common app essay.
Would my chances be altered if my Hispanic heritage was Spanish (European)?
Would my chances be altered if my Hispanic heritage was Spanish (European)?
Would my chances be altered if my Hispanic was Spanish (European)?
16.2%...meh
Wellll. if you were to interpret that statistic literally without giving any thought to the inaccuracy, subjectivity, lurking variables and other inherent flaws within such a system... you could say that a 14/100 chance is much better than the advertised 9.9/100 admit rate that yale publishes!
73% of getting in
25.4% of getting in lol.
it's not broken, that's a mathematical estimate. sorry brosky. it's ok, i went from 4 to 55.5. lol. too lazy to finish entering everything >.<
I had a 23% chance without saying that I applied early action and that I was a legacy applicant. Now I have a 67.4% chance.
is this one broken.. how do i only have a 3% chance...
I would not worry about the statistics offered by the chances calculator. While they are very interesting and useful, college admissions teams look at you much further than test scores and class rank. My predetermined chances for Yale were lower than I anticipated as well.
That is because those top universities want as much racial diversity as possible..
When I put in my real scores, GPA, etc, as a Caucasian, my chances are 14.2% . Leaving absolutely everything else the same, I changed my race to Hispanic, and my chances are now 67.6% . This means being Hispanic or another minority gives me nearly 5x better chance at being accepted than if I am white.
In an attempt to level the playing field in terms of equal representation at college, affirmative action has become a form of discrimination. I have a 99.3% average at school, but my Hispanic friend with an 85 average has a significantly higher chance of getting into my dream schools than I do. As much as I agree with the idea begin AA, the application of it has really disadvantaged whites and Asians. Whenever decisions are made based on the colour of one's skin, there is a problem.
caucasians are the minority now!
Affirmative Action is no friend to German-Americans, Irish-Americans, Russian-Americans, ect. They clump us together because of the color of our skin... Hello, it's irony on the phone for you.

The "or another minority" generalization is not correct. The target minorities are : Hispanic, African-American and American Indian. Other minorities are chanced the same as Caucasian.

I'm not interested in applying to Yale but I was wondering, if you have uncles and cousins that have gone there (but like 3rd cousins XD) that doesn't count as legacy, correct? Only grandparents and parents? (someone told me with various cousins that have gone there it'd give me a higher chance, but that sounds wrong).
@senangel - You have to add Yale to your tracker to get the most accurate prediction for yourself.
@Gabo79 - You're a Yale alum. The Davidson chances are probably off.
84% Yale, 24% Davidson?
@Haveacooky - Your stats are so much different from those of the people on whom the models are based that the results are simply invalid for you. I ran your stats on the new engine that I've been building and it gives you between 0%-0.1% at both schools. Apologies.
100% Chance at Yale, 0% chance at Harvard... This is so weird!
100% Chance at Yale, 0% chance at Harvard... This is so weird!
Yes, I'm in the process of massively upgrading the prediction system. Things will be in flux for a couple of days. My sincere apologies.
Does someone know why the Yale probabilities rose soooo much? I have a bigger chance at Yale than at Brown?!
There is no way I have an 81% chance into getting into this school.
60.5 percent chance? Really? Hahahah I would never get into Yale.

Haha, my percentage just randomly dropped by about 10 percent...

I have a higher chance of getting into Yale than Rice...something is wrong with this site lol
Can you guys chance me? I think i might have got a 2400 on my SAT
And that is when God gave the ten commandments to Moses who brutally caved in the skulls of Egyptians. That's it for today kids.
Hey does anyone know when the Yale application deadline is?
Dude, our squash teams are awesome and we'd rock you in crew. Just because we don't have 9'11" twins on our basketball team doesn't mean we suck at all sports...
