If you get deferred, don't look at this graph: college.mychances.net/colle...

1 point by penguinfrk   2 years ago

What am I looking at here?

2 points by zock   2 years ago

Mychances.net reported acceptances and rejections after people reported applying early and being deferred.

1 point by penguinfrk   2 years ago

So the x-axis is the mychances.net predicted acceptance, and the y-axis is....?

separates accepted and rejected.

EA?

2 points by penguinfrk   2 years ago

Early action

1 point by sjn732   3 years ago

Putting EA bumped me from 40.2% to 62.8%, but I've seen a very minimal difference between EA and RD at MIT.

2 points by baseball2horse   3 years ago

Don't forget about all the people who get deferred and then get it. If you count people who get deferred and then accepted into the EA acceptance rate it doubles.

Wow.... someone hella average kid got into MIT from our school with a score of 1990 on the sats..... given that she is african american, that still should NEVER happen at MIT. Shes totally average (as in getting a B in calc AB), no notable ECs that I know of. I cannot comprehend how this happened, the admits must've been tripping balls when this went through.

I've heard of a lot of MIT acceptances because the applicants had money, this one guy was rejected at first, but his family donated a lot of money to the school and he had dinner with the dean so the school "reconsidered" his application and decided to let him in next year if he super seniors somewhere else this year

affirmative action.

2 points by Brent   3 years ago

It's possible that someone might have extra factors that lead to admittance that you might not know about just from the social nature of your relationships with them... I generally try to give the adcoms the benefit of the doubt - I find it's better on my emotional well-being :D

1 point by freezingbeast   3 years ago

To add insult to injury, she was from a hella rich household. I'm not really pissed myself, but merely disappointed with the adcoms. None of the people admitted choose to go to MIT this year from my school, i guess that would just be karma?

Looks like MIT is going to help build a fusion reactor in Russia: web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2010...

1 point by test   3 years ago

Ahh yes, like Chernobyl but with 10x the power?

1 point by James   3 years ago

Totally different. But the odds are that the National Ignition Facility will beat the MIT team to it: lasers.llnl.gov/

2 points by Brent   3 years ago

but when will they discover cold fusion??

2 points by James   3 years ago

You don't believe the original cold fusion work of fleishmann and pons? ;-)

epic rejection...

1 point by jsglogo   3 years ago

The early action option doubled my chances to 50%, adding a legacy dropped me down to 14%. A little funny, but EA is sounding good right now. (Now if only I had a good sport I'd be perfect: it's a shame music doesn't count!)

true to its nerdom, MIT will release their regular decision on PI. Meh.. I still got 1 more year till i apply.

1 point by mind2spare   3 years ago

I tried giving myself legacy to see how it would affect my chances and my chances dropped by 45%, loooooool

1 point by dancan10   3 years ago

Before adding MIT to my applying list, I had a 22% chance of getting in, which seems pretty reasonable with my test scores and GPA. After adding it to my applying list, my chances dropped to 4%, which I know isn't right. I even played around with the boxes you can check when adding to applying, but it wouldn't change from less than 5%. Anyone have any insight to this?

2 points by Brent   3 years ago

FYI, the acceptance rate at MIT is around 10%, so you have a 3x better shot than a random applicant, which is a really good thing. You have strong stats, a 33% chance at MIT is really good.

2 points by sparx21   3 years ago

Wow with that status, one would think that you know that there are dozens of VALEDICTORIANS all over the world trying to get into MIT! The numbers are only the 1st hurdle. You better have a nice list of activities...and be a very interesting person who wrote an epic essay!

This number hasn't crossed 22 for me, and I have like 4.0 GPA and 2200 SAT Score

Why does adding MIT to my list lower my chance???

1 point by NOVAK   4 years ago

83.9% of getting into MIT?!?! I don't believe it...

Why does legacy drop my chance from 40 to 8?

Yes, 91% is superb. Godzilla, you have fantastic stats and you have a great shot at getting into some top notch schools. (of course depends on certain circumstances, like essays etc)

1 point by godzilla1954   4 years ago

Then I guess a 91% is superb? O.o, eh, you never know with sites like this.

1 point by James   4 years ago

Most people would kill to have a 33% chance at MIT. Those are very good numbers, if accurate, at a place like MIT.

1 point by esa.aly   4 years ago

33% i definitely won't be applying lol

1 point by Babasai   4 years ago

I used to have a 15% chance here. It rose to a 35% chance and stayed there for a while. Now it dropped to 0%. This is very heartbreaking.

I can't believe I have a 29.9 percent chance here-that's high.

At Princeton I have like 2.4.

Once I get my new ACT scores back it will be even higher...i hope. Let's just see if I can keep my GPA from falling next year...I got it to fall from 4.0 to 3.9, in only one semester :(
