Parchment Student Profile

I know for a fact that in my childhood I wanted to become a pilot so I could see all of the different people and events below me. However, when I grew older, it was impossible for me to be a pilot because I was afraid of heights. My parents recognized this, and used it to reason for a change. Luckily, my family and I left the rugged neighborhood of China - for the opulent hills of Diamond Bar, California. Here, I found more opportunities in a comfortable environment. For a short time, my parents believed we had moved in vain because their financial dreams were unfulfilled --and they still sometimes do. But I am privileged to be loved by these two phenomenal people who continue to be role models for me and my future.

In junior year, all the things I'd learned were put to use. I tutored an eighth grader named Brianna. The tutoring for her school work was easy, but my main focus, the difficult part, was developing her study skills. She was new at her school and needed time to adjust. Refining her habits was a long process, but the more time and effort I put into her, the more her skills grew. The key was understanding and addressing her inner fears and discomforts. My inspiration, the driving force behind my actions, was the leadership and gentleness that originated with my parents. I used these skills to see Brianna's life transformed. As our tutoring sessions came to an end, it was apparent that I had impacted her life. Her grades were slowly rising, and she was able to listen and concentrate in school. The ability to be her friend and help her has inspired me to continue living a life with a vision for change.
