I like how well rounded you are and that you have had leadership roles. As a junior you still have time to buff up your SAT which is a little low for Duke. I know 2220 is a great SAT score, but Duke's 50th percentile of admitted students is a bit higher than that. I think if you have your heart set on Duke that the early decision route is a good choice. Is seems that a higher percentage of students are admitted from the early decision process compared to regular admission admits. Just see if you can get that SAT closer to 2300. Best of luck to you!

If I have decided not to retake the SAT, do you think that would greatly effect me chances?

As I recall you took the SAT once before (or was it the ACT) and this latest score is a step change improvement. Since all SAT scores are reported, it might be best to stick with this latest score which shows a very positive change. Of course, taking the ACT with writing might be worth considering. You can choose to report it (or not) depending on the result - a composite score of 33 or higher would be worth reporting.

Now that you have met the GPA and test score credentials for Duke, visit the campus this summer. Talk with students, set-up an interview or two and then figure out what you can write in your upcoming essays that will set you apart - what's your hook? Also, figure out a strategy for your letters of recommendation.

Many applicants with 2300 SAT scores get passed over in favor of someone with a 2150 SAT score because the lower scoring candidate fills a need/gap. What sets you apart?

In my opinion, you should have no difficulties getting in. I would give you a 75% chance on getting in. Good Luck!

You are extremely qualified! They defer people a lot and then eventually let them in- 40% of their freshman class last year came off WL or D. PS- I'm principal of two orchestras too! :D What instrument do you play?
